To edit the background in PowerPoint, select a slide and open Design → Format Background. Choose a color or picture, adjust its settings, and select Apply to All only if you want the same background throughout the presentation.

If a logo, border, or photograph stays unchanged, identify what creates that part of the slide. It could be a separate object or a graphic inherited from the slide master. The sections below show which control to use.

How to edit background in PowerPoint: color and fill

In desktop PowerPoint for Windows or Mac:

  1. Select the slide thumbnail.
  2. Open Design → Format Background.
  3. Choose Solid fill, Gradient fill, or Pattern fill.
  4. Set the color and available fill options.
  5. Keep the change on the selected slide, or select Apply to All for the whole deck.

For a straightforward starting point, try an off-white background with dark charcoal text. A section divider can use a dark background with a short white heading. Give those two slide types different jobs: the first supports reading; the second signals a transition.

Changing a background color does not rearrange the text or change the placement of charts. If a slide still feels crowded, its layout needs attention too.

Replace a background picture or make it lighter

Use a picture fill when the photo should sit behind the slide content:

  1. Open Design → Format Background.
  2. Choose Picture or texture fill.
  3. Under Picture source, select Insert and choose your replacement image.
  4. Adjust Transparency to soften the picture behind your text.
  5. Select Apply to All if every slide should use it.

To remove a picture fill, switch to Solid fill and choose white or another color. This replaces the fill; it does not delete a separate picture sitting on the slide.

For example, a landscape photograph can support a short title placed over open sky. A detailed team photo competes with a dense agenda. Put that photo on a dedicated introduction slide and give the agenda a quiet background instead.

Edit a picture or shape that covers the background

Try selecting the background area. If selection handles appear, you have selected an object. A large rectangle or photo can look like the slide background while remaining a separate element.

For an obscured object in Windows PowerPoint, open Home → Select → Selection Pane. Select its name in the list to work with it. The pane also lets you hide objects temporarily to see what lies underneath.

To replace a selected photo, use Picture Format → Change Picture. To remove it, select it and press Delete on Windows or Backspace on Mac. For a selected rectangle, change its fill using Shape Format → Shape Fill.

An important distinction: a photo used as a background fill is managed through Format Background. A photo inserted as an object is managed through picture controls. Choosing the right route saves you from repeatedly changing a fill that is hidden behind another object.

Edit background graphics in Slide Master

A repeated logo, footer decoration, or border that cannot be selected in Normal view may belong to a master or layout. Use desktop PowerPoint to edit it:

  1. Select View → Slide Master.
  2. Find the layout used by your slide beneath its parent master.
  3. Select the graphic there. If it comes from the parent master, select that master instead.
  4. Move, replace, recolor, or delete the relevant object.
  5. Select Close Master View.

Edits to a parent master affect slides based on that master. Layout edits affect slides using that layout. For layout changes that need to be reapplied, return to Normal view and choose the updated layout under Home → Layout.

For example, if a logo should change only on chapter divider slides, work on their layout. Editing the parent master could change the logo across other layouts as well. Check which layout the slide uses before choosing the scope of the change.

Change the background in PowerPoint for the web

In the browser, open Design → Background. Choose Solid Fill for a color, or Insert Picture to select an image. Use Background → Apply to All for a deck-wide change.

Use desktop PowerPoint for gradient backgrounds, background-picture transparency, or Slide Master editing. The web version handles basic color and picture backgrounds.

Choose a background that supports your content

Before deciding that the slide needs a new design, look at what distracts you:

What you noticeUseful next change
The photo competes with the headingReplace it with a quieter image or use a solid fill
A repeated logo is outdatedEdit the appropriate master or layout
The color is wrong but the composition worksChange the background fill
Text, charts, and images compete for attentionRedesign the whole slide

For a sales results slide, try one clear headline, a chart with room around it, and a short supporting note. A restrained background helps the audience find the result. If everything remains the same size and tightly packed, a different color alone will not establish a reading order.

Frequently asked questions

Why does changing the background color leave the picture visible?

The picture may be a separate slide object or a graphic on the master or layout. Select it directly or through the Selection Pane. If it is inherited, open Slide Master to edit its source.

How do I change the background on just one slide?

Select that slide and change its background without choosing Apply to All. This is useful for a title slide or section divider that should stand apart from the rest of the deck.

Can I edit text inside a background image?

If the words are embedded in a single image, they are part of its pixels rather than separate PowerPoint text boxes. Edit the source image or replace it with a version containing the right wording. Text boxes placed over the image can be edited separately.

Does Beautify PPT only change the background?

Beautify PPT offers a broader slide redesign, including layout, typography, and visual hierarchy. Use it after deciding that the whole slide needs a stronger composition.
